Why Junior Golf Is One of the Best Sports for Kids (And Why Parents Go All In)

Participation in youth sports has been associated with the development of important life skills such as resilience, self-control, and the ability to manage pressure, all of which can positively influence academic performance and personal development.

This past Easter weekend, we were at the FSGA FJT Jacksonville Beach Open (13–15 division) at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.

Yes—Easter weekend.

And still, more than 50 junior golfers showed up ready to compete.

Some Families drove 4+ hours to be there, some 4 minutes away. Some kids were playing in their very first tournament, while others were experienced juniors chasing rankings and consistency. You had parents who’ve been doing this for years—and others just starting to figure it all out.

And somehow, in between tee times, warm-ups, and scorecards… families still found time to celebrate Easter together.

That’s junior golf.

A Personal Perspective That Stays With Me

There’s something personal about weekends like this.

There’s something personal about weekends like this. I’m the daughter of immigrant parents, and growing up, I watched my male cousins play sports—traveling on weekends, competing in tournaments, and building confidence through those experiences. I didn’t always see those same opportunities extended in the same way. So now, being around junior golf, it hits differently. What you see out there isn’t just kids playing a sport—you see opportunity, growth, and doors opening that weren’t always open before.

What This Weekend Actually Looked Like

Jacksonville Beach Golf Course brought real conditions. Partly Cloudy with Gusts up to 20 mph. Average temperature 77 degrees. The wind wasn’t just “a little breezy.” It forced adjustments on almost every shot. Kids had to think differently, stay patient, and commit to decisions even when things didn’t go as planned.

Balls drifting into water or settling into difficult lies. Balls being hit into the wind, around the corner. Being technically savvy was just as important as having good course management. Bringing out the right clubs, figuring out where to land the ball- many many decisions being made on the golf course over the 2 days of tournament play.

And then there were the moments you can’t plan for:

2 Hole in Ones !

A shot landing in a pile of fire ants—yes, that actually happened—and a rules official being called over.

Parents walking every hole, carrying snacks, watching quietly. Some temper tantrums. Tears.

And yes… even a kid whose brother plays on the European Tour, and kids whose fathers play on the Senior PGA Tour. Some kids, this was their first FSGA event as a 13 year old, and they are watching the grown up 15 year old’s hit their drivers. Imagine that.

But here’s the thing:

Out there, none of that matters.

Every kid still has to hit the next shot.

Why Do Parents Keep Showing Up?

If you’re not in junior golf, it might seem like a lot.

Early mornings.
Long drives.
Entire weekends committed to one event.

But parents keep showing up because they see what this does for their kids.

Not just in golf—but in life.

What the Research Actually Says About Youth Sports

There’s a reason so many families invest in youth sports like golf.

Studies consistently show that kids who play sports benefit far beyond the game:

  • According to the Aspen Institute Project Play, youth sports participation is linked to improved mental health, confidence, and social development.
  • Research published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine shows that youth sports participation helps develop resilience, self-regulation, and the ability to handle pressure—skills that transfer into academics and everyday life.
  • The CDC also highlights that youth sports improve physical health, reduce anxiety, and build lifelong habits.

Golf adds another layer to this.

Because unlike many team sports, kids are responsible for every decision, every shot, and every reaction.

That kind of pressure—the good kind—is where real growth happens.

Golf Teaches Things You Can’t Fake

Watching this tournament, you could see it clearly.

Kids learning how to:

  • Stay composed after a bad hole
  • Adjust when conditions aren’t perfect
  • Make decisions without constant guidance- learning course management
  • Playing with good golf etiquette and respect for the other players and the game
  • Finish what they started

There’s no hiding in golf.

Every Kid Has a Different Path

One of the best parts of junior golf is that not every kid is chasing the same outcome.

Some are working toward college golf.
Some are building competitive experience.
Some are just learning the game and gaining confidence.

All of those paths matter.
